Obama's on My Shit List

If you don't know why, you're not paying attention.

For those of us who aren't experts on this issue, what rights are and are not extended, and what exactly were the campaign promises that weren't kept? Is this not a step in the right direction, albeit a small one?

The anger that the LGBT community feels towards Obama and his administration has been building for a while - well before the links right here - because he wasn't fulfilling his campaign promises and seemed to be back-pedaling and/or waffling on a lot of the promises he made (e.g. repealing DADT), but it all came to a head when the Obama administration released a brief to the DoJ comparing homosexuality to incest and pedophilia.

It turns out that the brief was written by a Bush administration holdover, which explains the ridiculous and incredibly insulting language used. But then there was a big, fat wave of silence from the Obama administration, as if they hoped it would just go away on its own.

Which it might have, if it hadn't come after several other events/lack of events that had pissed the community off.

On top of that, the DNC is hosting the largest-ever LGBT fundraiser later this month in an effort to get money from a community that generally (with the exception of myself!) has significant amounts of disposable income while the president is rather obviously trying to run as far away as possible from the campaign promises he made. (Another thing with the promises thing you keep hearing about is that when gay rights activists starting calling on the president to fulfill those promises, he dismissed the call with jokes.)

Now, as if all of a sudden realizing that we are fucking pissed off and not going anywhere and they're about to lose a bunch of fat checks, Obama's announcing federal benefits for same-sex partners.

Sounds great, right?

Except that he's going to file them with a presidential memorandum, which means that they will disappear when he leaves office unless the next president chooses to keep them, and...

and...

AND!!!

the benefits do not include health insurance.

In the middle of a fucking legislative battle over reforming the health system and talking about giving every American health insurance, Obama is going to deny same-sex partners that single most-important reason for wanting fucking benefits, anyway.

I have never said this in my life before, and I feel very strongly about voting and I have always voted Dem, but if Obama keeps it up, I'm sitting the next election out.

As for the list of campaign promises, I'll get those for you, but I have to go pick up Morgan with her new braces right now!
